Since 2012, I have been photographing urban abandonment around Detroit. The haunting dark beauty of it fascinates me. Besides the current state of disrepair, the history of these establishments is equally stimulating.

Arnold Nursing Home : Located : 7 Mile/Greenview, Detroit. The Arnold Home on 7 Mile road was a mixed use hospital / senior care facility that ran from 1931 to sometime in 2004. It opened in 1932, with a further addition completed sometime in 1960's that brought its capacity up to 224 beds. It was a well-run facility that started to decline in the 90's. It closed sometime around 2004.

Brewster Projects : Brewster Projects were the largest residential housing project owned by the city of Detroit, located near the Chrysler Freeway, Mack Avenue and St. Antoine Street. The complex was home to such notable figures as Diana Ross, Mary Wilson, Florence Ballard, Lily Tomlin, and Etterlene DeBarge, during their early years. At it's peak in the mid 1950's, it housed 8,000-10,000 residents. As crime became a problem, the projects fell into disrepair. Two of the six towers were demolished in 2003. The remaining towers are in the hands of the city of Detroit. Latest reports state they will be torn down in the Spring of 2013 and the adjacent Recreation center, where boxer Joe Louis got his start, will be spared.

David MacKenzie High School : Location: 9275 Wyoming, Detroit, Michigan Built in 1927 and opened to its first class of students in September of 1928. Mackenzie High School was so named to honor the innovative educator and first Dean of the city college that would become Wayne State University. In 2007 it was shuttered and permanently closed after nearly 80 years of service to the Detroit Public School System due to budget constraints and declining enrollment.

Detroit Harbor Terminal Building : Detroit Harbor Terminal Building: Detroit, MI Location: S. McKinstry & Clark St. The Detroit Harbor Terminal Building (also known as the Detroit Marine Terminal Building and most commonly called the Boblo Island Detroit Dock Building or just the Boblo Dock Building) is an abandoned ten-story warehouse in Detroit, Michigan. The warehouse is located on the Detroit River just downriver from the Ambassador Bridge between S. McKinstry and Clark Streets on West Jefferson Avenue. It went bankrupt in 2004. The Detroit / Wayne County Port Authority planned on rennovating the building in 2006, but no action has been taken thus far.

Fisher Body Plant #21 : Six stories, 536,000 sq. ft factory located at St. Antoine and Piquette. Fisher Body didn't manufacture cars but it was the birthplace for the bodies of countless Cadillacs. The plant remained active until 1974. Several paint companies operated at the facility until it was abandoned in the mid 1990's. Now the interior is a bleak forest of pealing paint columns and graffiti.

Frigid Food Products Inc. : Location: Detroit, Michigan Not much is known about this building except that it was a distribution warehouse for frozen fish, frozen fruits, vegetables, berries, corn, peas, asparagus, cauliflower and broccoli.

King Solomon Baptist Church : Built in 1920, the old­er, abandoned building for­merly housed the conservative, pro-seg­regation­ist Temple Baptist Church from 1934 to 1951. It barred African Americans from at­tending, city records show. Looking for more space to accommodate a quickly growing con­gregation, King Solomon Baptist Church, founded in 1926, moved into the building a year af­ter it was vacated by Temple Baptist, and the au­dito­rium across the street became a popular stage for influ­ential black leaders. King Solomon Baptist Church still exists today and the new location is directly across the street from the old abandoned one, where the images below were taken.

Michigan Central Station : Michigan Central Station (also known as Michigan Central Depot or MCS), built in mid-1912 through 1913 for the Michigan Central Railroad, was Detroit, Michigan's passenger rail depot from its opening in 1913 after the previous Michigan Central Station burned, until the cessation of Amtrak service on January 6, 1988. The building was permanently closed later that day. The building then started its quiet decay. Throughout much of the 90's, the station has been vandalized. Its plaster and brass details were gutted out by scavengers. The station has appeared in several films. MCS was used for scenes in the movie Transformers (directed by Michael Bay) in October 2006. In January 2005, it was used as a location set for the movie The Island (also directed by Michael Bay). In September 2002, extensive closeups and fly-by shots were featured in the movie Naqoyqatsi. The 2004 film Four Brothers opens with the main character driving his car along the front of Michigan Central Station towards Michigan Ave. The building has been used in some of Eminem's work, including the title sequence of the movie 8 Mile and his music video for the song "Beautiful", during the beginning of which the building features prominently. A scene from the ABC crime drama Detroit 1-8-7 was shot and set inside the station.

Packard Plant : The Packard Automotive Plant is a former automobile-manufacturing factory in Detroit, Michigan where luxury Packard cars were made by the Packard Motor Car Company of Detroit, Michigan, and later by the Studebaker-Packard Corporation of South Bend, Indiana. The 3.5 million square foot plant was designed by Albert Kahn and is located on over 40 acres of land on East Grand Boulevard on the city's east side. It included the first use of reinforced concrete for industrial construction in Detroit. The Packard plant was opened in 1907 and at the time was considered the most modern automobile manufacturing facility in the world with skilled craftsmen who practiced over eighty trades. The factory closed in 1958, but the buildings remain standing as of 2012. The City of Detroit has pledged legal action to have it demolished or secured. Dominic Cristini, whose claim of ownership of the property is disputed, is said to be conducting construction surveys in advance of full-scale demolition as of early 2012. Since its abandonment, the plant has served as a haven for graffiti artists, urban explorers, paintballers and auto scrappers. Scavengers have extensively stripped the buildings of wiring and other building materials.

Paul Robeson Academy : Paul Robeson Academy: Detroit, MI Location: Corner of Fenkell & Linwood A 94 year old building, once housed the St. Francis Home for Boys orphanage, which moved to the 19-acre site in 1917, according to the Archdiocese of Detroit web site. The plot had been donated by auto pioneer Henry Ford. It was not immediately known when Detroit Schools acquired the building and property. The academy had 660 students ranging from Kindergarten to the 8th grade. Unfortunately around 4 a.m .on May 10, 2011 a fire broke out in the attic which caused extensive damage. The school never reopened. In the 10 months since the fire, scrappers and looters went through the property. To my surprise, books, supplies, equipment and school trophies still remain inside.

Schroeder Paint & Glass Factory : Location: Rosa Parks & Antoinette Founded and constructed in 1897. It supplied the auto industry with parts for nearly a hundred years. Long abandoned, the empty factory has fallen victim to scrappers and vandals. While little remains of the building, the most notable part of any visit to Schroeder is the abundance of graffiti. It is very unlikely that a use will be found for this site, but any real signs of demolition have yet to surface.

St. Agnes Church and School : Built to serve the newly developed La Salle Gardens area, it was known as the "Queen of the Northwest." As late as 1964, the parish served 1500 families. It fell victim to a massive closing of Catholic churches in 1989. Location: Rosa Parks Blvd & E. Grand Blvd: Detroit, MI.
